What is root canal treatment?

The canal is the space inside the hard layers of each tooth. It is filled with soft dental pulp made up of nerves and blood vessels that help your tooth grow and develop. However, when bacteria enter through deep cavities, cracks or defective fillings, it can lead to the infection of the dental pulp. Root canal consists in removing infected, injured or dead pulp so that you can keep your natural tooth.

An endodontic treatment

Root canal treatment, also called endodontic therapy, is necessary when the pulp of the tooth is infected following significant caries, cracks in the enamel or a trauma (shock). If the inflamed or infected pulp is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.

This treatment involves the removal of the infected pulp, the disinfection, and the filling and sealing of the root canal system. The tooth is then restored with a permanent filling or a crown.

When do you need a root canal treatment?

  • When tooth decay reaches the pulp;

  • When the restoration of a tooth, due to decay or a fracture, requires to be too close to the nerve;

  • When the tooth reacts badly to a trauma and develops an irreversible pulpitis;

  • When the tooth is necrotized.

    The infected tooth must be treated promptly

    It is very important to treat a tooth that has an infected pulp. In addition to causing significant pain, infection can turn into an abscess or spread to the rest of the body, thereby severely impairing your health. If you do not choose to undergo a root canal treatment, tooth extraction is another option that will drain and eliminate the infection while eliminating the risk of spreading.

    Why keeping a tooth that is no longer viable?

    Even devitalized, a tooth performs various functions:

    • Chewing;

    • Maintenance of the position of your teeth;

    • Preservation of the jawbone.

      Indeed, when present, teeth stimulate the tissues and muscles of your mouth and strengthen the bone structure that supports them. When we are aging, we are all losing a certain amount of jawbone. This loss is accelerated when the portion of the bone that anchors the teeth no longer receives the necessary stimulation and begins to break down or resorb.

      Is it painful?

      Contrary to some beliefs, root canal treatment is not painful in itself. Adequate anesthesia is very important because this type of treatment requires a long duration. It sometimes requires more than one appointment. The protocol and procedures for anesthesia remain the same as for any other operative dentistry intervention.

      What is influencing the cost of the treatment?

      First of all, the dental pulp is the part in the center of a tooth made up of vessels and nerve endings. The pulp extends into each of the roots, inside fine channels called canals. There are one to four canals per tooth. The cost of the treatment depends on the number of canals of a tooth. Rates are based on the Fee Guide and Description of Dental Treatment Services from the ACDQ.

      The cost of the root canal treatment performed by a general dentist includes the following acts, done in one or more appointments:

      • Treatment plan;

      • Clinical acts (cleaning, enlarging, filling of the root canal system);

      • X-rays.

        However, the cost of the root canal treatment excludes the final restoration of the tooth. Therefore, you have to add the cost of an amalgam or composite restoration.

["post-659983","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

Root canal treatment -
